WHY HAVE COMPUTERS

Having a computer instead of “doing it manually” is now the norm. But why? Why do builders have a nail gun instead of a hammer or an electric saw? Why do we want Faster internet? Because we get the job done quicker and therefore we are more productive.

Just like the builder with his nail gun and electric saw, even if the tools we use are not in constant use we want to be productive when we do use them.

With the value to any business of even the lowest employee now more than $1/minute, with managers at $2-3/minute and senior managers at more, why have them using slow, outdated and unproductive computers.

Increase you and your staff’s productivity with a faster computer. Even if productivity improves by only just a few minutes per day, a faster computer can more than pay for itself and has the benefits of reduced stress and frustration staff have with outdated and underperforming systems.

Windows 8 – the next version of Microsoft Windows

Just when you thought you have your computer sorted with Windows and Office, Microsoft have announced a release date for the next version of Windows – Windows 8.

The major change for Windows 8, and what will differentiate Windows 8 from all other Operating systems (MacOS, Android etc), is that it will be the same to use on your Smart Phone, Tablet and PC/laptop. You will need to learn it only once, not learn a new system for every device you purchase.

Windows 8 will be available from 26th October 2012. Full details here http://www.nzherald.co.nz/business/news/article.cfm?c_id=3&objectid=10818575

Any computers purchased since 7th June 2012, and until 31st January 2013,  are able to purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 for $19.95 simply by registering here:- http://windowsupgradeoffer.com/ Labour to install is not included.

Also there is a new version of MS Office coming - MS Office 2013  Preview here http://www.microsoft.com/office/preview/en

PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE – Why you need it

A client once asked me why his computers needed Maintenance when they were working perfectly well, my response was to asked him if he only serviced his car when it broke down.

Computers, like anything we use or have, need to be maintained to keep them working and working to optimum levels.

Our Preventive Maintenance program is designed to have a “good look under the hood” and find and eliminate issues before you have them. With everyone completely reliant on their IT systems the last thing you need are issues that could have been prevented.

Contact us for all details.

ONLINE BACKUP – Case study

We recently had one of our Online Backup clients needing to restore deleted emails from nearly 4 months previous, which had become critical supporting evidence in a court case.

Fortunately they were using our Online Backup.

Although we only guarantee to keep the last 30 Days backups offsite on our server we did have the last 384 complete backups (15 months) still available on our server. Additionally they had a complete copy of these files saved on a Local USB Disk at their office.
With this number of days to choose from we were easily able to retrieve the missing emails for them.

Quote from our client - “Our ability to be able to restore the deleted emails was a significant addition to evidence needed in a court case.
We are very thankful we had ABTRON’s Online Backup Solution, as none of our previous backup solutions would have enabled us to retrieve this valuable information”.

Our Online Backup solution – not just reliable and for your piece of mind, but very useful in a forensic situation. Contact us for more details.

Virus’s and SECURITY

Are you receiving Phishing or Hoax emails?

We have recently seen several emails claiming to be sent from KiwiBank and  Microsoft - “It has come to our attention that your Microsoft windows Installation records are out of date. Every Windows installation has to be tied to an email account for update. This requires you to verify your email account being the recipient of this update. Failure to verify your records will result in account suspension” – ITS NONSENSE.

Here are details of a hoax supposedly sent from IRD and their advice :-
“Please be careful not to give out your IRD number or any personal details unless you're sure who you're giving them to.
We're aware of hoax emails circulating that:
•        claim they come from Inland Revenue or a tax refund agency asking you to click on a link to claim a refund, which takes you to a fake website
•        ask you to ring a phone number to confirm your personal details, including your username and credit card, which gives them enough information to steal your identity.
Our advice is:
•        don't click on a link or reply to an email that appears suspicious - delete these from your inbox and trash folders
•        don't provide any personal details over the phone unless you know the person or business you're talking to.
If you'd like to report any suspicious emails or online activity, please contact us at phishing@ird.govt.nz. We do follow up on the information you provide and take action to close these phishing sites down, but we won't respond back to you.

<Click Here> to go to the IRD Privacy Page”

REMEMBER NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR PASSWORD OR DETAILS OVER THE INTERNET - IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS or SUSPICIONS CONTACT US FIRST.

31-August-2011 - Spring Newsletter

Believe it or not the first day of spring is nearly upon us.

Here is the our latest updates from the world of IT and Communications.

LATEST Major  “Gremlin” – MORTO Worm

We would like to bring your attention to an aggressive Internet worm dubbed “Morto” spreading via the Windows Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP) .

The worm is using brute force attacks on user passwords to compromise machines via the Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP), and it is spreading fast. (i.e. its basically guessing passwords until it finds a match).

Details Here: http://www.microsoft.com/security/portal/Threat/Encyclopedia/Entry.aspx?Name=Worm%3AWin32%2FMorto.A

If you think you have this please let us know ASAP.

Y2K is coming, again, are you prepared?

Remember Y2K, where you needed to prepare and have all your systems ready for the switch to the new Millennium? Or the change in GST Rates? Well there is a new “Y2K”/GST scenario on the horizon, the phase out of Windows XP. Unlike “Y2K”/GST you will still be able to run Windows XP on your existing systems, however Microsoft will not be supporting or supplying patches for XP so those annoying “updates” that come along regularly to fix security issues with XP will not happen. Continuing to run XP without these updates will leave your system vulnerable to a Cyber attack like MORTO above.  Although XP support wont stop until mid 2013 there are still many PC’s and Laptops that are running Windows XP and between now and then a decision needs to be made to either upgrade Windows or replace. Additionally, and more critical, is the software you are running compatible with Windows Vista or 7? Software is the critical issue with this phase out, so please check with your software vendor as to its compatibility with Vista or 7 or check costs to upgrade. If you need some assistance with planning moving away from XP or implementing Windows Vista or 7 across your site we can help. Like Y2K/GST plan to do it early so you are not caught in the rush at the end.

Can you afford $15,000?

From the 1st of September 2011 the Copyright (Infringing File Sharing) Amendment Act 2011 comes into effect. It amends the Copyright Act 1994 to provide owners of copyrighted works such as movies, TV shows and music a quicker and easier way to penalise people infringing their copyright via online file sharing. Depending upon circumstances, generally the minimum penalty is $275 with a maximum of $15,000, payable to the copyright owner. The person who owns the Internet account is liable, even if he or she wasn't the person who broke the law. Allegations of copyright infringement made against the account holder by the copyright owner are presumed correct unless evidence or reasons are provided to show why they aren't guilty. 3strikes.net.nz is a useful resource for business owners wanting to know how the new law will affect them, and includes many helpful tips. The two key messages are to control your Internet connection and remove unneeded P2P software. GFI WebMonitor WebFilter edition is a fantastic option for SMB customers wanting to protect themselves, starting at just $220 plus GST for a 10-user annual subscription licence. That's even less than a fine and time associated with going through the tribunal procedures. So don't wait for to be contacted talk to us now to prevent being stung!

KANTAN - Managed Print Services

Windows 7 + Service Pack 1

Microsoft have released Service Pack 1 for Windows 7 (W7). This can be downloaded and installed via Windows Update or we can install for you, just let us know.

We have installed W7 at a number of clients now and it is receiving very positive feedback and we have found few issues with it.

Internet Explorer v9

Microsoft have also released version 9 of Internet Explorer, this is only available for Windows Vista or 7.

This can be downloaded from here or we can come and install for you.

We have installed and tested on one of our PC’s and it seems to be ok. It has a cleaner feel to is and is more like Google Chrome than previous versions of IE.

On Initial testing it appears faster than IE 8.

This will be an automatic upgrade we install at your next Preventive Maintenance, so if you have a reason not to install it, please let us know so we can remove it from the list.

Windows XP

Just  reminder that Microsoft will be not supporting Windows XP after mid 2013.

Although that is over 2 years away we are recommending to clients that they look to install Windows 7 on any new PC purchases, as the life of these will go past XP’s support.

All new hardware is Windows 7 compliant, it is legacy software that could cause issues when migrating in the future, so upgrading of these to a W7 compliant version is a must.

For Systems on our Professional Support Contract or FlatLineIT, any Support cost for an upgrade from XP to Vista or W7 would be included.

Disaster Recovery

While our thoughts are with everyone in Canterbury and Japan, after the tragic events that have unfolded there, it does prompt us to look at our own readiness for any disaster that may strike our business.

It is all very well to have an insurance policy to cover a disaster – fire, earthquake, flood etc, but its not a lot of use to you if all your records (Stock value, Fixed asset list, WIP etc) are all on your computer that is no longer functioning or unreachable and you cant make a claim.

Then there is your Debtors Ledger – how will you know how much to collect, and from whom, if you don’t have access to these records. Don’t worry your Creditors know how much you owe them.

Talk to us about our Online Backup and Disaster Recovery options, so you can rest easier knowing that if a Disaster does strike you are prepared.

TV’s, Digital Cameras and Display Signage

If you are looking for a good deal on a TV, Camera or TV Display Signage, let us know as there are a large number of models we can source for you.

Pricing Changes

Unfortunately, with increases in our costs we are forced to increase our prices.

There is a $10+GST hour increase in Glens rate, and a 10c/km increase in Mileage. My charge rate remains the same, as does our server rate.

To counter these increases, and reward prompt payment, we have introduced a discount for prompt payment, as follows:-

8% for payment On Order, On Delivery or Cheque by return mail.
5% for payment within 7 days of Invoice.
3% for payment on or before 20th of the following month

The value of the applicable discount will be calculated and shown on the invoice.

The discount is only valid for when we receive payment, so if you have any queries on an invoice please raise it with us asap to avoid missing out on your discount.

We are also able to accept payments by VISA or MasterCard, a 2.5% Service Fee applies.

These changes do not affect our FlatLineIT Clients.
